Abstract

Artificial intelligence has become one of the most pressing challenges for modern media. By 2024, AI is already capable of generating text for undemanding readers and illustrations that are difficult to distinguish from real photographs. Using a methodology incorporating several surveys and expert interviews, the authors present general trends in this area. Beyond text and image generation, journalists utilize neural networks for a range of tasks including transcription, information retrieval, translation, etc. Importantly, these innovations are being adopted more rapidly by freelancers than by staff journalists. The authors posit that this is only the beginning, and the percentage of media professionals using neural networks will continue to grow.
